DATE: Sunday 21 March 2010 This could be your last chance to taste rare and delicious honeys. Yellow box, red gum, kamarooka, grey box, messmate, ironbark, orange blossom, clover, salvation jane, red box, peppermint, stringybark, desert banksia, mallee, ti-tree, melaleuka, manuka. How many have you tasted? Some you may never taste - changes in climate, use of chemicals, reduced access to sites (eg national parks), lack of consumer support and the ever present threat of varroa destructor mite are all endangering the honey industry. Take honey from the kamarooka, an endangered eucalypt found only in a few scattered remnant stands on private land, roadsides and a few reserves in central and western Victoria. Kamarookas flower onlyonce every five years. Join us for an exciting, educational and very tasty day as we meet the producers of the documentary Honeybee Blues, taste our way through honey-based cakes, learn the secrets of the bee-dance and how to manage a hive, and meet local apiarists. Honeybee Blues documentary screening on SBS 1 December 2009. Links: |
